Are there released games with AI NPCs? What shipped by 2026

BAD LINE TEST

Yes. As of October 2026, AI-driven NPCs that generate their words or actions while you play have shipped in a handful of released games, including inZOI, Fortnite, Where Winds Meet, Whispers from the Star, and Suck Up!. Two of the biggest promises have not shipped. PUBG Ally ran only as a two-week beta, and Ubisoft’s NEO NPC never left the prototype stage.

This article counts a character as an AI NPC only if a model produces its lines or decisions during play. Voice lines that a model generated before release are fixed files, so they do not count. Rick Vu, who directed this draft, builds Red Dog Studio, a game studio, so he has a stake in how this field develops.

Where AI NPCs have shipped, as of October 2026Six cases sit in the shipped group: inZOI's Smart Zoi in Early Access, NARAKA BLADEPOINT MOBILE PC VERSION's AI teammate in China, which NVIDIA announced as shipped, Fortnite's Darth Vader and creator islands with Conversations, the side characters in Where Winds Meet, talk-driven indie games such as Whispers from the Star and Suck Up!, and the Mantella mod for Skyrim. Two cases are tests or prototypes: PUBG Ally, which ran as a two-week beta, and Ubisoft's NEO NPC and Teammates, which stayed a GDC demo and a closed playtest. Below both groups sits the pattern: AI NPCs ship where one bad line costs little.SHIPPED, OR ANNOUNCED AS SHIPPEDTESTS AND PROTOTYPESINZOISMART ZOI, EARLYACCESSNARAKA MOBILE PCANNOUNCED, CHINAONLYFORTNITEVADER, CREATORISLANDSWHERE WINDS MEETCHAT WITH SIDE NPCSINDIE TALK GAMESWHISPERS, SUCK UP!MANTELLA MODSKYRIM, FALLOUT 4PUBG ALLYTWO-WEEK BETA, RTXONLYUBISOFT NEO NPCDEMO, CLOSEDPLAYTESTSHIPPED WHERE A BAD LINE COSTS LITTLEOPT-IN, SIDE ROLES, MODS, GAMES ABOUT TALK

Shipped in large commercial games

inZOI

inZOI is Krafton’s life simulation. It entered Early Access in March 2025, and its Steam page still lists it as an Early Access game. NVIDIA’s post on the inZOI and NARAKA launches says Smart Zoi characters run on an on-device Mistral NeMo Minitron small language model. The same post says they adjust their daily schedules based on their experiences, and that players can steer them with free-form text. Players switch it on through an experimental setting. Shipped, but opt-in.

NARAKA BLADEPOINT MOBILE PC VERSION

The same NVIDIA post says NetEase would add an on-device AI teammate to NARAKA: BLADEPOINT MOBILE PC VERSION on March 27, 2025. NVIDIA announced this ahead of the date, and this article found no later report confirming the launch. The teammate joins your party in the Free Training mode, finds items, swaps gear, and suggests skills. NVIDIA describes the game as Chinese-exclusive. Announced as shipped, in one region and one mode. NVIDIA’s CES 2025 announcement also said the main PC version would get the feature later in 2025. This article found no confirmation that it did.

Fortnite, from Darth Vader to Conversations

Darth Vader came first. On May 16, 2025, Epic added a conversational Vader voiced by James Earl Jones, according to Disney’s announcement of Darth Vader in Fortnite. Droid Life’s report on the Fortnite Vader launch says Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash wrote the replies and ElevenLabs’ Flash v2.5 produced the voice. Within a day, players had Vader repeating profanity, and Epic issued a hotfix, as Fox News reported. Shipped, as one licensed character.

Epic then turned the same technology into a creator tool. At State of Unreal 2025 it showed the Persona Device, which GamesBeat’s report on the Persona Device says runs on the technology behind the Vader character. The tool arrived in April 2026 as an experimental feature called Conversations, according to Epic’s post on AI-powered conversations. Outlook Respawn’s report on the UEFN launch says it reportedly used Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite and ElevenLabs, and that Epic paid the model costs during testing. On July 30, 2026, Epic’s Fortnite Ecosystem v41.30 notes said Conversations had exited Experimental, so creators can now publish islands with LLM-powered characters. Shipped. One limit matters for design. Epic’s personas documentation says the LLM session clears after each round, so a character does not remember a player between rounds.

Where Winds Meet

Where Winds Meet is a free-to-play open-world game by Everstone Studio, published by NetEase. It came out on Steam on November 14, 2025. The AI disclosure on its Steam page says it “includes AI-driven NPC text and voice chat that responds to player input in real time.” Only some NPCs use it. GamingBolt’s look at the game’s NPC chatbots says the chatbots do not replace the main story. Players type free-form replies, and good answers raise an NPC’s affection. The same article describes players who talked a guard into believing they had fathered his child. Shipped, as a side system.

Shipped in smaller games and mods

Small teams have gone further than the big ones, because they build the whole game around the conversation.

Whispers from the Star by Anuttacon came out on Steam on August 14, 2025. You talk to Stella, a stranded astronaut, through video calls, voice messages, and text. The store page says “There’s no script” and discloses “fully voiced, AI-powered conversations and performances created in collaboration with an actor.” Shipped.

Suck Up! by Proxima came to Steam on October 1, 2025. You play a vampire who has to talk your way into homes using your real voice. The store page’s AI disclosure says the AI characters respond “in real time based on tone and strategy.” Shipped.

Mantella is a mod for Skyrim and Fallout 4. It turns your speech into text with Whisper or Moonshine, sends it to a language model, and speaks the reply with Piper, xVASynth, or XTTS. The player installs it and supplies the model, and its setup asks for an API key file. Shipped, as a mod. Mantella shows that some players will install a speech, model, and voice pipeline themselves to talk to characters they already know.

The guide to AI-native games covers more games of this kind, where the model is the core loop.

Tested or shown, but not shipped

PUBG Ally

NVIDIA’s CES 2025 post on ACE autonomous characters said “In 2025, PUBG IP Franchise is introducing Co-Playable Character (CPC) with PUBG Ally.” It named Mistral-Nemo-Minitron-8B-128k-instruct as the model. It described a teammate that talks strategy, shares loot, drives, and fights.

That teammate reached players in June 2026, and only for two weeks. Krafton’s press release on the PUBG Ally beta announced Ally Duo, an Arcade mode on Sanhok in which you play with an AI teammate named Ella. It ran from June 17 to July 1, 2026, on an on-device small language model built on NVIDIA ACE. The Update 42.1 patch notes call it “a limited-time beta mode” and require at least an RTX 2080 Ti or RTX 3060 with 8 GB of VRAM. Krafton has not announced a permanent release. Test, not shipped.

Ubisoft NEO NPC and Teammates

Ubisoft unveiled NEO NPC at GDC 2024. The Ubisoft NEO NPC press release, dated March 19, 2024, calls it Ubisoft’s “first player-facing generative AI (GenAI) prototype.” Inworld’s tools let Ubisoft’s narrative team write each NPC’s background and conversational style, and NVIDIA Audio2Face drove the facial animation. Ubisoft showed it only as a private demo, and it was never released to players. Prototype.

Its successor got further. Ubisoft’s announcement of Teammates, dated November 21, 2025, calls it Ubisoft’s “first playable generative AI research project.” Players use their voice to direct two AI squadmates and an assistant named Jaspar through a short shooter level. Ubisoft shared it with “a few hundred players in a closed playtest” and announced no release. Test, not shipped.

What the pattern says about where it works today

The shipped list has one thing in common. AI NPCs ship where a bad line costs little.

In the large games, the AI character sits off the critical path. inZOI puts it behind an experimental toggle. Where Winds Meet gives it to side characters, while writers keep the main story. NARAKA uses it in a training mode in one market. Fortnite started with one licensed character and then handed the tool to creators under platform rules. In each case a broken conversation does not break the game.

Small studios take the opposite bet, and it works for them for the same reason. In Suck Up! or Whispers from the Star, an odd reply is part of the game, because the player’s job is to work on the character. The player expects surprises, so an unscripted answer reads as play.

The teammate that fights beside you has proven hardest. PUBG Ally slipped from “in 2025” to a test planned for early 2026, then to a two-week beta in June 2026, and that beta required an RTX graphics card. A combat teammate has to read the match, act in time, and run next to a game that already uses the GPU. The AI NPC latency and voice guide explains why that timing budget is tight.

Players probe these characters fast. Vader swore within a day. A Where Winds Meet player talked a guard into believing in a child that did not exist. Any team that ships an AI NPC should plan for that from the start, and the piece on keeping AI NPCs safe from jailbreaks covers how.

So the honest answer to the question is yes, with conditions. AI NPCs are in released games today as optional systems, side characters, licensed events, mods, and small games built around talk. A main-cast AI character in a big release, one that carries the story and fights beside you, had not shipped as of October 2026.

Questions

Are there any released games with AI NPCs?

Yes. As of October 2026, players can talk to model-driven characters in inZOI, Fortnite, Where Winds Meet, Whispers from the Star, and Suck Up!, and in Skyrim through the Mantella mod. In most of them the AI character is optional or a side role.

Is PUBG Ally out?

Not as a permanent feature. Krafton ran PUBG Ally in a limited-time beta mode called Ally Duo from June 17 to July 1, 2026, on PC with an NVIDIA RTX GPU. Krafton has not announced a full release date.

Did Ubisoft release its NEO NPC characters?

No. Ubisoft showed NEO NPC as a prototype at GDC 2024. Its follow-up, Teammates, was announced in November 2025, after a few hundred players had tried it in a closed playtest. Ubisoft has announced no release.

Can Fortnite creators publish islands with AI NPCs?

Yes. Epic moved its Conversations feature out of Experimental on July 30, 2026, so creators can now publish islands with LLM-powered characters. Before that date, creators could test the feature but could not publish with it.
